Following
the recent success of being chosen as one of the four lucky students
to join the Cancer Research Daihatsu Rally Team (driven by John Matthews),
Adam Biggers is now the only student to remain working within the highly
successful team.
Adam
was chosen whilst studying to become a motor vehicle technician at Hopwood
Hall College, Rochdale and is now a valuable member of the team. The
team consists of John Matthews (driver), Alexis Harper (co-driver),
Gary O'Neil (head mechanic) and Adam Biggers (mechanic).
After
many successes within the team (for example, achieving a trophy for
'best novice' at the Colin McRae rally in Galashiels, Scotland, and
their 5th place positioning at the Jim Clark rally in Scotland) Adam
knows only too well how important his role is…
"There are 3 to 4 services during a rally lasting for 20 minutes
each. I've got to be quick at my work, but also accurate. It's all
about keeping the car going".
The
role of the mechanic in such a sport as rallying may be considered a
background role, with mechanics often not getting a mention. However,
this is due to change this weekend when Adam takes the place of Gary
O'Neil as head mechanic (placing Adam in charge!). This important stage
in his rally career takes place this weekend at the military training
area of Otterburn. The track consists of 100 miles of tarmac and proves
to be a challenge for the team. But Adam is confident that this rally
could be another success…
"We've
been getting better and faster with experience. I think that this
is mainly due to John getting more and more used to the car".
The
final rally in the series takes place at Otterburn on Sunday 1st October
2000 and should prove to be a highly enjoyable and testing event for
all involved!
