MATTHEWS TESTS WITH GEOFF JONES IN WALES

Local rally driver John Matthews has just returned from the Welsh mountains after testing a new car on Tuesday.

‘I had a go in a Geoff Jones prepared Nissan Micra. Geoff is one of the best at preparing rally cars in the business. He won at the Manx Rally a couple of years ago. I have already looked at one of his Subaru Impreza’s late last year.

‘I have to decide which class to move into, Group A in a machine like the Micra or Group N with a Subaru. The Micra is a different beast to drive with modified brakes, differentials and gearbox. I was amazed at how effective the brakes where and how it stuck to the road in the wet. It takes 100% concentration though, with both hands firmly on the wheel at all times.’

This year will be the third season that John will team up with CIS and the Rochdale Exchange Shopping Centre. John had considerable success in 2000, winning Fastest Novice on one event as well as setting the fastest stage times of the year. The team expects podium results in 2001.

The team have yet to decide which championship to contest. ‘It is very confusing this year. There are several options including the British Rally Championship and it is difficult to know which to go for. However we are seriously considering moving into international events. This looks like a viable option on paper but we will have to see’ said John.
