John Matthews has just returned from the North Humberside rally on Saturday March 25. John, who drives for the Rochdale Exchange Cancer Research rally team came 9th out of the eleven cars in the first round of the Daihatsu Challenge.

John said, "We were driving very very fast. Stage 2 was problematic - it just didn't feel right but 3 and 4 we were truly flying. The latter stages were covered in hail, which made driving very slippy indeed. Very scary!

"I honestly thought we were at the top of the field. We have high expectations this year and I was disappointed with the result. I reckon the competition is tougher than ever this year. There are a lot of new comers. I have been training lots and am perhaps stuck between two driving styles.

"I think I cocked up the tyres too, experimenting when I should have been listening to the experts.

"In any case, we will improve on the Plains rally in May. I'll be keeping off the brakes from now on. In Norway last month I learnt how fast the little car can go. And that's faster than this result. On the positive side we did not make one mistake. Alexis (new co-driver) and I got on really well. And this was only our second event together. We can build on this - it's a solid foundation."

John's next rally is in Wales on May 6.
